The more recent interest in body piercings and body modification is usually attributed the gay culture, and started to become popular around 1976, when a gay jewelery maker began to experiment with nipple piercings and later genital piercings.

In the mid 1980's body piercings began to become more and more popular as body piercing studios and stores began to multiply across the country. As major stars began to show their piercings, and having piercings became more of a show, than as a sexual fetish.

Here are a few of the healing times for piercings.
cheek,eyebrow 3-6 mos
ear lobe 1-3 mos
lip 3-4 mos
nostril 3-6 mos
septum 3-4 mos
tongue 2-3 mos
nipple 4-6 mos
navel 4-8 mos

A new piercing will be sore, red or tender for up to several weeks. During the healing process a white or slightly yellowish discharge is normal, and as long as there is no increase in pain, or redness and swelling, it does not signify an infection. As the wound heals it forms a fistula, or a tunnel of scar tissue. Be sure to practice good hygiene, and follow any aftercare instuctions your piercer gives you. Wait until the piercing has fully healed before you change jewelery.
